Are you drinking enough water? Chances are, you’re not. According to recent scientific research, most Americans don’t consume enough water. In fact, a 2016 Boston College study suggested that at least two-thirds of all Americans are coming up short when it comes to meeting their recommended daily water intake.

How Much Water Should you Drink a Day?

It depends. Most people need about 8 to 12 cups a day. But your weight and activity level largely determine the amount of water you need to maintain proper hydration. According to Sheila Tucker, MA, RD, LDN, registered dietitian at Boston College, our daily water requirement is a function of the amount of energy (or calories) we use. Other experts also point out that the climate you live in is also a factor. So if you’re a runner in Arizona, your daily water requirement will be higher than if you’re a couch potato in Alaska.

How Can you Tell if You’re Drinking Enough Water?

Instead of counting cups, watch the color of your urine. If you’re drinking enough water, your urine will be clear or pale yellow. A darker yellow means your cells are shrinking and need more hydration.

When you don’t drink enough water, you can become dehydrated. Some of the common symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Feeling thirsty
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness

Tips on Drinking More Water
