Every business needs access to clean, quality water. But for some businesses, including many manufacturers, water is an essential part of the production process. Secondwind works with several leading manufacturers in New Hampshire, including one that produces doors and windows in Londonderry. Read on to learn how Secondwind’s commercial water treatment professionals helped keep this manufacturer’s operations running efficiently and safely.
Recycling and Reusing Industrial Water
This client makes many types of door and windows for homes, businesses, and other wood-framed buildings. As part of their manufacturing process, several large machines wash the glass panes used in the doors and windows, dry them, mount them in a frame, and assemble the frame. As you can imagine, a tremendous amount of water is used in this process. To conserve water, the manufacturer uses a Kinetico commercial water treatment system to treat the water used in the washing process. Doing so allows the manufacturer to use the same water all day, versus constantly dumping water down the drain.
One of our primary equipment suppliers, Kinetico, provides treatment equipment to the glass machine manufacturer, to treat the wash water so it can be reused all day. When that equipment needed service, Kinetico referred them to Secondwind. We have been servicing these systems since 2009. They have several workstations that require deionized water for part of their cleaning process. There are several small DI exchange tanks throughout the building. When these tanks reach their capacity, Secondwind rebeds them.
Reducing High Silver Levels in Waste Water
In addition to servicing the manufacturer’s equipment, Secondwind has helped them remove exceptionally high levels of silver from their waste water. The source? The silver coating from the glass used in the doors and windows. Silver, like gold, is normally considered a good thing—but not when it comes to your water! Dumping waste water with exceptionally high levels of silver is bad for the environment, and violates state ground water discharge regulations.
Customizing a Commercial Water Treatment System
The manufacturer faced a difficult problem that needed to be addressed as soon as possible. “There was no way to eliminate the source of the silver and the levels in their waste water were too high to send down the drain to their municipal water treatment facility,” says Steve Guercia, Commercial and Public Water Manager at Secondwind Water Systems.
Because there really isn’t an “off the shelf” solution for removing silver in an industrial setting like this, the Secondwind team created a customized commercial water treatment system. “We conducted onsite bench testing to identify a process that would remove the silver most efficiently and cost effectively. We designed a combination of components and the controls necessary to make it work,” he points out.
The system, which is being used at two of the manufacturer’s plants, has been online and working to control their silver for over three years.“This is the kind of project that really demonstrates how we put our team’s extensive knowledge and experience to work for our customer,” says Secondwind President and Founder Christine Fletcher.
