Some homes have “Drain Lines” that carry the backwash water from your water treatment equipment to the discharge point – the place where that water leaves the home. These drain lines often run along external walls in the basement, which can expose them to very cold temperatures during a cold snap. If these drain lines freeze, the system will not clean itself, resulting in poor water quality.
Even worse, the line could burst under pressure and cause a flood inside your home. During prolonged cold snaps be sure to check to see if the lines are frozen. You should be able to hear water running when your system is in backwash. If a drain line is frozen, a hair dryer can thaw and release the ice buildup.
