In this month’s blog, we discuss how the Secondwind team optimized the commercial water treatment system of a global manufacturer of high-level communication systems. The result? An increase in performance and productivity and an overall decrease in manufacturing costs.
Just because something is working, doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity for improvement. This is the mindset Steve Guercia, commercial and public water systems manager at Secondwind Water Systems has every time he’s involved in servicing or managing a commercial water treatment system.
“Oftentimes when we’re brought into a new project, we find that the customer is relatively content with the way things are working with their existing commercial water treatment system,” Steve says. “But very often, once our team learns more about the company’s processes and needs, we determine their system can be doing a lot more for them,” he adds.
Reducing the Cost of Commercial Water Treatment
As part of their manufacturing process, the high-level communication systems manufacturer uses deionized (DI) water. DI water has no minerals in it. It is very expensive to produce because of the process involved in removing the minerals. “Their water treatment system was producing the DI water they needed, but it was costing them a lot of money,” Steve notes.
The problem: The Secondwind team found two major aspects of the manufacturer’s system that weren’t being properly managed by their existing water treatment company.
- It didn’t have water quality monitors following each stage of treatment. Since DI water involves a multi-stage treatment approach, if one stage fails, the other stages have to work harder to compensate.
- The reverse osmosis system that preceded the DI exchange tanks wasn’t working properly because its membranes were being damaged by chlorinated water.
The solution: Secondwind made two important adjustments to their water treatment system.
- Installing new water quality monitors for each stage of treatment.
- Adding a dechlorination stage prior to the reverse osmosis system.
The result: These adjustments improved the reverse osmosis process and extended the life of the RO membranes and exchange tanks. Their commercial water treatment system is much more reliable and consistent, and the overall improvement in performance has significantly reduced the costs involved in producing DI water.
Optimizing Commercial Water Treatment Systems
“There are a lot of commercial water treatment systems that have been in place for years and the owner accepts how it works because that’s how it’s always worked,” Steve says. “But as we have illustrated with this system, that doesn’t mean it can’t be better,” he adds.
