A Simple Solution to Water Staining
An owner of an Inn in Hampton Falls called us to look at this existing water treatment system. He was complaining that his house cleaning staff had to scrub every shower and toilet every day to get rid of the iron staining. He also had iron staining in his indoor pool and hot tub which was causing him to have his maintenance staff clean the pool and hot tub frequently. He had a treatment system for iron but the company who had installed it 2 year previously, was telling him the tanks already needed to be replaced. He needed a solution for water staining.
The system consisted of two wells, storage tanks, and multi-stage treatment for iron and hardness.
The equipment that had worked previously he said, but recently the iron seemed to be getting worse and worse. The system was only two years old and he was already getting iron bleed-through. He was looking for an expert in water treatment and water chemistry to help solve his problem.
He was afraid he was going to have to replace the system with a new one because it was a significant investment. I went through and inventoried the equipment and did specific water quality testing after each piece of equipment. I found that the system used an odd chemical injection technique to try and combat the iron, which was actually making things worse and beginning to foul the softener resin.
The solution did not require that we add or remove any equipment. We simply changed the chemical that was being injected from alum to a more conventional oxidant. A non-toxic chemical you can find at the grocery store. And now 100% of the iron is being removed during the filtration stage, before it even gets to the softeners.
The treatment equipment did not need to be replaced, it just needed to be set up properly. What the owner thought was going to be thousands of dollars in replacement equipment turned out to be a few hundred bucks in service and testing.
