There are many conflicting demands on everyone’s money, whether personal or business. Homeowners and couples evolve methods for deciding what wins in terms of the family budget. In a business, expenses are usually prioritized through some ROI process. How does water fit into this? How do you justify the expense involved in improving your water quality? Let me help.
Here are just 6 hidden costs of problematic water.
- Ruining Equipment. Water with low pH will gradually dissolve your plumbing and fittings. This becomes painfully obvious when there is a place where water sits and a copper residue is left behind. But in a business you may not see the corrosion even though it is occurring. You can extend the life of your plumbing by treating your water.
- Increased Energy Costs. The minerals in water with dissolved hardness precipitate whenever the water is heated. This leaves a rock-like scale on heating elements and heat transfer surfaces. The device has to work much harder to transfer heat to the water, so your energy costs increase..
- Increased Personnel Costs. Water with iron and manganese can leave stains. Whether it is direct employees or subcontractors, someone is cleaning those stains to keep your facility presentable.
- Bad Impressions. Water that stains leaves a bad impression. Whether it is employees or customers using your restrooms and kitchen facilities, someone is noticing. Water that tastes poorly also leaves a bad impression. Employees may feel that you don’t care enough to invest in their wellbeing. Customers may feel that the poor quality reflects on the other goods or services that your business provides.
- Emergency Issues. Water that carries solids – sand, granite chips, mica chips, or ferric iron – can interfere with mixing valves, flush valves and pressure. All of these things will lead to more work for your custodial staff or your plumbing vendors. These people may not realize that these problems are fixable, so they may just come when called.
