Water quality related plumbing problems can happen because of deposition or corrosion. When minerals precipitate they leave behind a scale in plumbing and appliances that can result in loss of efficiency and costly repairs or replacement. When water conditions cause the plumbing to corrode it can result in white buildup or copper colored staining in fixtures, and ultimately, leaks.

Plumbing Problems & Treatment Options
Water is the universal solvent and it dissolves a little of everything it comes in contact with. The process of water dissolving metals such as copper pipes or metal fittings is called corrosion. Low pH is common in our region and means the water is acidic and is likely to dissolve metals it contacts. Dissolved chlorides from road salting aggravates the corrosive tendency of water, leading to pin hole leaks. When these conditions exist in the presence of copper plumbing a blue-green stain will occur. These conditions shorten the life of your plumbing, water heaters and appliances.
Scaling occurs when minerals such as calcium and magnesium precipitate out of the water, usually when heated, and adhere to surfaces within your plumbing, water heating systems or appliances. A rock-like scale builds up on metal surfaces which can cause a restriction in flow and can lessen the efficiency and shorten the life of appliances such as your water heater and dishwasher.
